Snapchat Did a Redesign and It Was Not a Hit

Snapchat Redesigned

Last year Snapchat redesigned their layout in the UK, Australia, and Canada to help monetize its service by adding in more advertising. However, the transition has proven that it did not go over well with users.

The social media platform rolled out its new look at the end of last year and the results are not what Snapchat was hoping for. 83% of reviews on the App Store were negative from their users. Many complained that their feeds weren’t in chronological order and that overall, it was downright confusing. Not exactly what you want to hear from your users.

User Tweets

Many users have actually tried to contact Snapchat on Twitter. They wanted to voice their concerns and frustrations and took it to Twitter since there is no way to contact them on the actual Snapchat app.

According to TechCrunch, only 17% gave the new design a three to a five-star review.

Why the change

The hopes were that the new redesign would boost Snapchat’s revenue. The channel has been dropping in popularity over the last year and fell short of Wall Street earnings expectations in Q3. That led to a $443 million loss. “The redesign mixes Stories, where Snapchat shows ads but which have seen stagnation in sharing rates amidst competition from Instagram Stories, into the more popular messaging inbox, where Snapchat’s ephemeral messaging is more differentiated and entrenched,” according to TechCrunch.

The redesign also stops users from being able to watch a lot of people’s Stories in a row. Instead, users do not have to tap a preview of the next person’s Story before you can watch it.

Snapchat’s Response

So what did Snapchat have to say in regard to the concerns users have? “Updates as big as this one can take a little getting used to, but we hope the community will enjoy it once they settle in.” So it looks like this new redesign might be here to stay, even if users aren’t a fan of it.

Facebook Will Punish ”Engagement Bait”: Posts that Beg For Likes, Comments & Shares

Facebook Engagement Bait

Social Media Managers will have to be extra cautious when posting on Facebook. It’s not uncommon for a typical post to ask users for engagement. However, Facebook has announced that it will now demote ”engagement bait” aka posts that ask for likes, comments or shares.

What is “Engagement Bait?”

Demoting “engagement bait” posts is another way that Facebook is improving its News Feed. You may be wondering what “engagement bait” is. It’s when a post asks for requests from their followers. It’s usually something simple, such as, “Like our post, if you agree!” or “Tag a friend who would love this!” The reason is to ultimately get your interaction and engagement with users up so it looks better for your Page analytics.

“We want to reduce the spread of content that is spammy, sensational, or misleading in order to promote more meaningful and authentic conversations on Facebook,” the company said in a statement.

When will the change take place?

The social media platform is giving publishers and Pages a couple of weeks to adjust to the changes before content becomes affected. After that, if the content is begging or baiting users to interact, Facebook will have the total reach of their posts reduced. Depending on how much and how often it is done will also determine how hard the Page or person is hit.

According to Facebook, the change won’t affect posts that ask for help, advice or recommendations. In the beginning, they are also allowing for engagement baiters to earn their original reach back with good behavior. According to TechCrunch, “Facebook did specify that there are some exceptions to this clampdown, and that includes examples like a missing child report, raising money for a cause, or asking for travel tips, to quote the company directly.”

This isn’t the first change from Facebook. The company has made several changes recently to improve the News Feed and give users overall better experience.

Instagram Offers New Option to Follow Hashtags

Instagram Follow Hashtags

Instagram has announced another new feature that people are really going to like. Users will now be able to follow specific hashtags on the widely popular social media platform.  This, along with being able to follow profiles, with posts using those tags appearing in your main feed, is going to open up new opportunities for Instagram being a discovery engine.

Instagram explained it like this:

“Following a hashtag is just like following a friend. To get started, search for a topic you’re interested in or tap on a hashtag from any post. You’ll see relevant hashtags displayed in your search results along with related accounts. When you find a hashtag you like, open the hashtag page and tap on the ”Follow” button. You’ll begin seeing top posts from that hashtag in your feed and some of the latest stories in your stories bar. You can always unfollow a hashtag at any time.”

What does this mean?

Being able to follow hashtags directly in Instagram will allow communities to find each other better. It also will allow customers to find specific products or services that they are in need of, without hassle. This may also lead to people being more specific with their hashtags. For instance, instead of just using #marketing, it would be smarter to use #marketingtips or #marketingadvice. The more popular a hashtag is, the more likely your post will get lost in the shuffle. Being more specific will hit a smaller audience who is more likely to follow your page and hashtag.Instagram follow hashtags

Why the change?

Instagram is also looking to expand. Although the platform is photo-based, it wants to show users that it can offer more than a pretty picture. Instagram for marketing is on the rise. Users, marketers, and influencers are active and Instagram has taken notice. They want to expand into realms that we aren’t even aware of yet.

Instagram is constantly testing new features and adding new functions to the mobile-friendly social media site. This is only the beginning for the changes that we can expect from Instagram in 2018, especially with a video being the main focus.

Are you excited for all the changes Instagram is making?

Facebook Gets Rid Of Tinker Feature

Facebook Tinker

If you log into Facebook today you may notice there is a slight difference to the homepage. The famous Tinker feature has officially been removed from the right side of your News Feed.

Tinker was the box in the upper right-hand corner. It summarized what your friends had been liking, commenting on and doing on Facebook. A member of the Facebook team has confirmed that the feature is “no longer available.” The news isn’t that surprising since there have been reports of it missing from some News Feeds over the last few weeks. The official decision to remove the Tinker was made a week ago, but Facebook slowly rolls out product changes, so the change didn’t hit everyone at once.

Facebook Tinker

Why the change?

The confirmed reason for getting rid of the Tinker is unknown. Usually, Facebook gets rid of features that aren’t being used or aren’t progressing the way they had hoped. The Tinker was first launched in 2011 when Facebook first launched their algorithmic News Feed. It allowed for posts that seemed most relevant and interesting to you or that had a lot of engagement to appear in the sidebar. However, there was a lot of controversy surrounding it. People considered it to be the “creeper feed” since it showed exactly what your friends were doing. Facebook did create an option to mute it or turn it on, but that option is now gone. This may be one of the reasons for the sudden change.

Another reason may also be that Facebook is focusing on new ways to share content. According to TechCrunch, “Facebook is using its new mission statement to spearhead a more proactive stance about how and what news and other information get shared on its platform.” They are also focusing more on Facebook Stories and video content as a whole.

There will probably be a variety of changes and new features that Facebook will implement. Social media is continuing to be on the rise and is changing the game for how we communicate and how marketing is done.

New Instagram Messaging App Is Being Tested

Instagram Messaging

The rise of Instagram has been incredible. The platform, owned by Facebook, has taken social media by storm. The success of the brand is due to its visual component and easy accessibility. This, along with their Instagram Stories feature, has allowed for Instagram to become as widely successful as it has. Now, Instagram wants to add a standalone Instagram messaging app into the mix, which creates a new channel for users and advertising.

Instagram Messaging

Instagram confirmed to Quartz that it was indeed testing a new app. The app is called Direct, and it will be for direct-messaging only, allowing it to be separated from the main Instagram app. “We want Instagram to be a place for all of your moments, and private sharing with close friends is a big part of that. To make it easier and more fun for people to connect in this way, we are beginning to test Direct—a camera-first app that connects seamlessly back to Instagram,” a representative added.

If this sounds familiar to you, it’s because it is. Facebook did something similar with their Messenger app. If you use Facebook on your phone, you now have to have the Messenger app downloaded in order to chat with someone in private.  The app now sells over 1 billion users monthly and is in the process of testing ads in Messenger as well.

Features of Direct

During the testing phase, Direct is looking a bit like Snapchat. It has become known that Instagram has based a lot of its features from what Snapchat has done or was trying to do. Just like Snapchat, the Stories and Discover tabs will be located in the new app, specifically at the top. Other features include; the app opening to the camera, people swiping to see their inbox of private messages, sending photos and videos that feature augmented-reality filters and illustrations and they can opt to send text messages instead.

Advertising Platform

It’s unknown when the new Direct app will officially release. One thing to note, however, is that when it does, it will add another platform to place advertising into. This creates a new stream of marketing to showcase your products or services.

Twitter Testing New ‘Tweetstorms’ Feature

Tweetstorms

Have you been on Twitter and witnessed someone doing a series of tweets to get their whole point across? Some businesses do it as well to tell you more about their brand or products. These tweets that appear one right after another are called “tweetstorms” and Twitter is testing a new feature that will allow users to create these tweetstorms more easily.

Twitter Confirmation

Twitter has confirmed that the new feature is currently being tested. This announcement comes after Twitter just upped their character count to 280. However, it still doesn’t always leave enough room for users to get their stories and opinions across to others.

  Tweetstorm

It was first hinted that this new feature was in the works back in September. Twitter, however, declined to comment. The blog, Android Police, was the first to report this week that the new interface was “popping up for some users of the Android alpha app.”

Availability

Currently, it’s not available to everyone but there’s a good chance it will be brought to the public in the very near future. The way it works is pretty simple. According to Tech Crunch, “In addition to supporting more than 280 characters by connecting tweets together, each tweet stands alone and can be shared – retweeted, replied to, etc. – on an individual basis.”

How to use it

The feature has a “+” button on the right side of the compose screen. This is next to the buttons where you can add GIFs, photos, location, and polls. First, you tap the button and then you can enter in the separate tweets on their own lines, creating the tweetstorm. When complete, just hit “Tweet All” and the tweetstorm will have officially been sent. Twitter makes sure to post each tweet in the correct order as well.

Twitter Tweetstorm

It’s unknown if this will be the official look for the tweetstorm platform and when the official launch will be. All we know is that Twitter is trying to give their users what they want and need.
