Instagram is yet again testing something new. It is testing a new “Type” feature that is being used within the Stories feature. It is meant to allow for users to share messages that are text-based instead of photos or videos.

The Type feature is located at the bottom of the screen where you go to take a picture. It’s next to the Boomerang and Live options. Once you select that feature, you can choose how the font text appears and change the background color.

Why the Added Feature?

So why is Instagram adding this when video content is where it’s at? Because there is a need for it. Blogger, influencers and marketers have been known to take a picture with a neutral background and add some text themselves. As great as photos and videos are, sometimes it’s great to have whatever they are communicating in writing. A great example would be of a recipe; simply jot down the ingredients and how it’s prepared and then their followers can screenshot it and have it on hand. Now this will be a bit easier and less of a step for users. The default background color looks a lot like Facebook’s status update since it is a bright ombré.

There have been a lot of changes to Instagram lately. It looks like Type isn’t just the newest change though. According to WABetaInfo Instagram will also start to notify users when you take a screenshot of their story. It won’t send the first screenshot notification to the person, but it will inform you that the next time it will.

How To Share A Profile On Instagram

If you’ve ever been scrolling on Instagram and discovered a profile you love, it wouldn’t be unheard of to want to share it with your friends. In the past, most people would take a screenshot of the profile and text or message it or send them the profile name. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just share the profile instead? You can and these screenshots and captured by Adweek, along with the explanation will show you how.

Step 1:

Go to the profile you’d like to share. You can go to a user’s profile by tapping their username on one of their posts in your feed or by searching for them on the Explore tab.

Step 2:

Tap the three dots in the top-right corner of the screen.

Step 3:

Tap “Share this Profile.”

Step 4:

A list of your contacts will appear. Either scroll through the list and tap the circle next to a user’s name to select them as a recipient, or tap the Search bar to search for one or more recipients manually. Note: You can share a profile with up to 15 people at once. You can also share a profile with a user group you’ve previously created.

Step 5 (optional):

Tap “Write a message…” to add a comment to your message.

Step 6:

Tap “Send” to share the profile with the selected recipient(s). Each recipient will receive a link to the profile in an Instagram Direct message, along with your personal message, if you added one.

Instagram Offers New Option to Follow Hashtags

Instagram has announced another new feature that people are really going to like. Users will now be able to follow specific hashtags on the widely popular social media platform.  This, along with being able to follow profiles, with posts using those tags appearing in your main feed, is going to open up new opportunities for Instagram being a discovery engine.

Instagram explained it like this:

“Following a hashtag is just like following a friend. To get started, search for a topic you’re interested in or tap on a hashtag from any post. You’ll see relevant hashtags displayed in your search results along with related accounts. When you find a hashtag you like, open the hashtag page and tap on the ”Follow” button. You’ll begin seeing top posts from that hashtag in your feed and some of the latest stories in your stories bar. You can always unfollow a hashtag at any time.”

What does this mean?

Being able to follow hashtags directly in Instagram will allow communities to find each other better. It also will allow customers to find specific products or services that they are in need of, without hassle. This may also lead to people being more specific with their hashtags. For instance, instead of just using #marketing, it would be smarter to use #marketingtips or #marketingadvice. The more popular a hashtag is, the more likely your post will get lost in the shuffle. Why the change?

Instagram is also looking to expand. Although the platform is photo-based, it wants to show users that it can offer more than a pretty picture. Instagram for marketing is on the rise. Users, marketers, and influencers are active and Instagram has taken notice. They want to expand into realms that we aren’t even aware of yet.

Instagram is constantly testing new features and adding new functions to the mobile-friendly social media site. This is only the beginning for the changes that we can expect from Instagram in 2018, especially with a video being the main focus.
